- DAY 1 – BIENVENIDO A ESPANA
Bienvenido a España! For the next week you will travel through Spain, an empire that once stretched across a significant portion of Europe and the Great Sea. The Spanish are passionate people that love to live life to the fullest. While we visit, we will embrace adventure and the holy with an equal passion. Our time will be spent in the spiritual heartland of Spain where Christians, Jews, and Muslims once lived in harmony. Our homes for the week will be in monasteries, a life that few people today experience. Welcome to Spain!
- DAY 2 – TOLEDO
Toledo has been the spiritual capital of Spain for a long time. The Romans first arrived in 192 BC, settling the hillside area into a fort, which eventually became a town that was the capital of the Spanish Empire. We will start in the fortress of Alcazar, once a Moorish citadel and fort. In the afternoon we will have a local guide reveal the interesting history of Toledo. We will walk the hilled town and take in the charming labyrinth of streets, including the main square, Plaza de Zocodover.
- DAY 3 – HARMONY
For hundreds of years, Toledo was a city of unusual tolerance and peace. Muslims, Jews and Christians lived side by side in harmony. The expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition shattered that peace. Today we will explore significant Muslim, Jewish and Christian religious sites to gain insight in how harmony once existed and to ask ourselves if it can exist in the same way today. And surprise, you might just get to get a literal birds-eye view of the city.
- DAY 4 – MASTERPIECE
On our last morning in Toledo we will engage in the monastic rhythms of the place we’ve called home the last few days. After noon prayer we will visit a beautiful Renaissance hospital that now contains some of the artistic masterpieces of Spain, including works by Toledo’s most famous artist, El Greco. The afternoon agenda is light so you can break up into small groups and do any last minute exploration or shopping.
- DAY 5 – AVILA
In the middle of a windy plateau scattered with giant boulders, sits the walled medieval town of Avila. Though once known as Avila of the Knights, the town is now famous for its saint Theresa. We will journey to Avila this morning and, once we are settled in, explore for ourselves. You will feel like you are going back in time as you walk the peaceful lanes of this beautiful town.
- DAY 6 – SABADO
It is Sábado in Spain and we will start the day celebrating at the Avila Cathedral. Brush up on your Spanish because you’ll need it this morning. After a delightful lunch we will visit the historic Basilica then give you some wander time around Avila in your small groups. Tonight we will recall the last several days and pack up for Madrid.
- DAY 7 – MADRID
We will enter the vibrant, historic city of Madrid this morning for a whirlwind of exploration and fun. As the capital of Spain since 1561, Madrid has secrets and shopping that will delight and inspire. We’ll hit the highlights and give you some time to explore on our final full day in Spain. Tonight we will celebrate with renowned Spanish tapas and pass the candle as we recall our glorious week in the Old World.
- DAY 8 – ADIOS ESPANA
As you have explored the ancient spiritual heart of Spain we hope you have discovered more about your own faith. The saints of old have inspired us to seek God and reach out to our fellow man. Take what you’ve learned in Spain and bring it back home. There are those around you that need to see the saint in you. Adiós España.
