Celebrating Jason Wendel

Jason Wendel joined Wonder Voyage in 2000 as a summer intern. He has remained a faithful and vital member of our team. Since our beginning, Wonder Voyage has shined with our fabulous website, created, maintained, and ever-evolving through Jason’s genius. He gave us a professional and visual edge when the World Wide Web began to bloom.

The Guide

Jason was a Voyage Guide for 20 years, leading trips with a passion for the world and way too much humor for one human. When Yakov Smirnoff says, “I believe that laughter is a language of God and that we can all live happily ever laughter…”  I think of Jason.

Jason Wendel is the funniest human I know.

The Adventurer

For the last 30 years, I have traveled the world with Jason. We reminisced about those travels as we sat on the deck of the science vessel while watching sealions and penguins jump off icebergs in some sort of animal kingdom party. Some highlights:

  • We encountered a puma in the mountains of Nicaragua (I ran away, leaving him as prey).
  • We enjoyed a two-week jaunt along the Amazon River in Peru; every inch of our bodies was covered in bug bite welts.
  • Together, we hiked the Samaria Gorge in Crete while discovering ancient Orthodox chapels and roaring waterfalls.
  • We filmed a documentary in the South Sudan bush, one of the most dangerous places in the world.
  • We visited leper colonies and spent time with children rescued from indentured slavery in India.

Finding a travel buddy is a rare gift. That day in Antarctica, wrapped in our winter gear, we rejoiced as we became one of the 00.014% percent of the world’s population who had stepped onto the seventh continent. What made the voyage sweeter in February of 2019 was that is was the initial launch of one of Jason’s initiatives he’d been working toward for ten years.

The Birth of Boundless Expeditions

Boundless Expeditions was birthed in Antarctica.  BE is a curiously not-so-secret travel club for exploration enthusiasts designed to provide exceptional voyages for like-minded explorers. It isn’t for everyone, but it’s a unique source of adventure travel for the few.

Jason Wendel is a pioneer of all things Wonder Voyage, and we are thankful that he’s a massive part of the Wonder Voyage community.  This November, we’ll have traveled to all seven continents together, making us part of the roughly 0.00005% of the human race that has accomplished this goal!

After a decade working in parish youth ministry Shawn started Wonder Voyage Missions. Over the last 15 years, WVM has led thousands of pilgrims to over forty countries. Shawn is a storyteller and an award winning filmmaker. He is an author who brings the gift of engaging narrative to our journeys. Shawn is dedicated to creating voyages that give people abundant opportunities to encounter God.
