Mission Trip or Pilgrimage to Alaska: Anchorage

"A land of mystery for those willing to explore the call of the wild."
  • Historical Site
  • Mission Opportunity
  • Outdoor Adventure

Alaska has been called America’s last great frontier. Double the size of Texas, Alaska is a mammoth of nature. The region’s original people are still vibrant cultures today. From the pristine rainforest of Southeast Alaska to the Arctic Circle, Alaska remains a land of mystery for those willing to explore the call of the wild. Tucked between two mammoth peaks and poised on an inlet rife with sealife, Anchorage, the Big Apple of the north, is the perfect launching ground for your Alaskan adventure.

A pilgrimage or missions trip to Anchorage, Alaska, is one where you must be willing to dive into God’s stunning creation and listen to His voice through breathtaking mountains, magnificent shorelines, and complete solitude. Our Wonder Voyages to Anchorage combine local service and natural adventure. Imagine hiking mountains, visiting ancient glaciers, or watching humpback whales surface in front of you. The best aspect of this journey is the voyage into the heart of God through His creation. Come and experience a land where the sun does not set until 11:30 pm and rises by 3 am. Does the wild call to you?

  • Day 1- Go West!
Welcome to Anchorage! Used as a resting place by indigenous peoples for centuries, the Anchorage area now boasts nearly half the state’s population. Your journey up of wonder this week will focus on going, being, and doing. May it be a true journey of the heart as you explore, worship, and serve this week.
  • Day 2- Go Explore!
Today, you can immerse yourself in the region’s amazing natural beauty and intricate cultural heritage. Beginning with a hike on Flattop Mountain—the most climbed mountain in the state—and ending with a visit to the Alaska Native Heritage Center, it is sure to be a day that connects you to the heart of the land and the heart of her people.
  • Day 3- Do Good!
In his first Epistle, John the Evangelist encourages Christians to “…not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” Love in action will be the seed thought this morning as you participate in a service project benefitting your local hosts. In the afternoon, the journey leads to the historic Eklutna Village – the oldest continuously inhabited Athabaskan settlement. This unique village contains St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, the oldest building in greater Anchorage.
  • Day 4- Be a Pilgrim!
A pilgrimage journey is less about the destination than the journey itself. In the words of Abraham Joshua Herschel, “Faith is not the clinging to a shrine but an endless pilgrimage of the heart.” The path today is one for hearts and souls. A visit to Chugach State Park, a hallowed hike, and Eucharist will make this day one that connects you to God, to your community, and to the land itself.
  • Day 5- Go on an Adventure!
For folks living in cities in the Lower 48 States, viewing diverse wildlife often requires a trek far from town. In Anchorage, however, wildlife is not only abundant but close by. Today’s adventure focuses on the amazing flora and fauna that Alaska boasts. From a local wildlife refuge to a park known for throngs of salmon, it is certain to give a glimpse of the natural world’s importance to this region.
  • Day 6 – Be a Community!
The final day in Anchorage focuses on community. Exploring the town and spending time with your family of faith is a great way to process the importance of fellowship. As the day wanes, there will be time for celebration, reflection, and prayer as you transition your hearts toward home.
  • Day 7- Go Forth!
A new day brings a new journey. We send you home with words from the Book of Common Prayer: “Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit.” We encourage you to go, be, and do, wherever you are. May you remain on pilgrimage and on the lookout for wonder.
