Mission Trip or Pilgrimage to Croatia

"...absorb the impact of the earliest days of the Christian faith."
  • Classic Pilgrimage
  • Historical Site

In the year 295 AD, the Roman emperor Diocletian began building his retirement palace on the main harbor in what is now the city of Split, Croatia. The ancient Roman city of Salona was modeled after Rome herself, and still bears the traces of early Christianity and the work of Titus and the Apostle Paul.

Prepare yourself for the journey of a lifetime as you travel to the central Dalmatian region and absorb the impact of the earliest days of the Christian faith. Engage the culture as a pioneer, and learn new and illuminating things about the history of the church. Mingle with the local inhabitants as you seek to see the face of Christ in their faces. Join us for a pilgrimage or missions trip to this spectacular location.

  • Worship in a Croatian church, which was planted by one of our own Wonder Voyage Board members.
  • Walk the Stations of the Cross at a shrine in the city of Makarska.
  • Spend time in prayer and contemplation in St. Domnius Cathedral.
  • Volunteer at a new rustic camp being started for Croatian youth.
  • Explore the 1700 year-old summer palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian.

Every Wonder Voyage itinerary (mission trip and/or pilgrimage) is personalized to the desires, direction and personality of each group. This itinerary is only a description of the kind of journey we can create for your unique team.

You have begun a once in a lifetime journey to Croatia, one of Europe’s hidden treasures. Croatia was the historic borderland between Christianity and Islam. Our first stop is the thriving city of Split, where we will take a ferry to the island of Brac. We will settle into our home and prepare ourselves for a week of adventure through prayer and worship. A hearty Croatian meal will send you off to sleep peacefully. Get ready to experience Croatia!
Today we will worship together at the first Protestant Church founded in Split. After a local lunch, we will return to the island of Brac to explore and enjoy a day of rest, “Adriatic-style.” Take a swim in the clear sea, read a book on the warm shore, fish with nets at sunset, or stroll through a grove of olive trees. We will gather after dinner to reflect over the beauty and discovery given to us though the day.
Today we are on to new adventures as we head south down the coast to the city of Makarska. We will walk through a sacred place, marveling at the covered hills, caves, greenery, and roaring rivers. Throughout the year, this is a place of pilgrimage visited by travelers from all over the world to admire the spiritual and natural phenomenon. This stop will take us to a dramatic rendering of the Stations of the Cross where we will engage in this ancient tradition.
After a visit to a Franciscan monastery built in 1614, we will embark on an adventure: white water rafting. We will travel down the beautiful River Cetina and enjoy the power and awe-inspiring beauty of the landscape God painted. One if the brightest reminders of God’s love and creativity are His creation. Later in the afternoon we will visit a local market and let the team buy and prepare a local Croatian meal.
Split is situated on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. From the 5th to the 2nd century BC, Greek colonists settled the mainland. Later, the Romans followed – in particular the Emperor Diocletian, who, being of Dalmatian origin, elected to build a huge palace in the city. Enjoy a city tour featuring the historic inner city, built around Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The importance of Diocletian’s Palace far transcends local significance because of its level of preservation, stretching from Roman times onward.
  • DAY 6 – SALONA
Today we’ll let you sleep in and enjoy a lazy beach morning. In the afternoon we’ll visit Salona, the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. Many a Christian was killed in Salona for their faith in Christ. We will ponder their martyrdom and the power of Rome in those ancient days. You will have a couple of more hours in the afternoon to wander Split.
On our last full day in Croatia we will travel to the Adriatic city of Trogir. Here the team will have lunch and time to explore. You will walk through 2300 years of tradition. Its rich culture is created under the influence of old Greeks, Romans, and Venetians. Trogir with its concentration of palaces, churches, towers, and a fortress on a small island, deserves its nickname “THE STONE BEAUTY”. You will have some time to shop for souvenirs and then head back for a very special Croatian celebration meal.
You have had an incredible week exploring Europe’s hidden jewel, the Adriatic paradise of Croatia. The food has been rich, the spiritual exploration deep, the exploration intriguing and the friendships enriching. Our prayer at Wonder Voyage is that as you leave this pilgrimage you remember that your life continues on pilgrimage as long as your heart longs after the Lord. Blagoslov iz Hrvatske. Blessing from Croatia.
