Mission Trip or Pilgrimage to San Francisco, California

"God is in all of these places..."
VOYAGE TYPE
  • Historical Site
  • Mission Opportunity
  • Outdoor Adventure

San Francisco is the city of endless hills. The city holds landmarks that nearly everyone can recognize: the Golden Gate Bridge, the cable cars, Alcatraz. San Francisco sprouted when masses of people swarmed to the city to find gold in 1949. The descendants of those masses still live in the city to this day. People from China and other parts of Asia, Europe and Mexico have melted together to form the lifeblood of San Francisco.

In our voyages to the Bay City, we focus on the huge contrasts and contradictions found within its limits. Imagine yourself trekking across the Golden Gate Bridge and the next day creeping through the darkness at Alcatraz – and later still, bombarded by the color and noise of Chinatown. God is in all of these places, and we invite you to seek him with us on both mission and pilgrimage.

Overview

  • Walk the labyrinth at Grace Cathedral, one of the most spectacular churches in the US.
  • Enjoy a spooky exploration of Alcatraz after dark.
  • Spend the night in a quiet lighthouse overlooking the ocean.
  • Feed and clothe the homeless in the Tenderloin district.
  • Work alongside the finest outreach organizations in the world in reaching San Fransisco’s poor.

Itinerary

Every Wonder Voyage itinerary (mission trip and/or pilgrimage) is personalized to the desires, direction and personality of each group. This itinerary is only a description of the kind of journey we can create for your unique team.

  • Day 1 – Arrival
Welcome to San Francisco, a city of hills, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, numerous cultures and sights. This week brims with mission and exploration. After your arrival, your director will run you through a basic orientation. This journey promises to be unforgettable.
  • Day 2 – With Hearts Set
We’ll begin our week at an organization dedicated to meeting the needs of San Francisco’s less fortunate. Our group will be educated about poverty to help put our week of service into perspective. Our afternoon will take us to the labyrinth at Grace Cathedral, a magnificent church set on one of the highest points of the city. We’ll take some time there to ask God to speak to us this week as we set our hearts on pilgrimage. Later, we’ll head into Chinatown for some exploration and discovery.
  • Day 3 – Golden Gate
Today we’ll head to an organization responsible for bringing groceries to over 23,000 households-in-need every single week. Later we will reach out to the city of San Francisco in a unique way by serving the National Parks Department at Golden Gate National Park. The Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful piece of architecture and truly defines the skyline of San Francisco. After our mission at the parks district, we’ll walk across this awesome structure, taking in the fantastic view of the city.
  • Day 4 – In Chains
We’ll begin our day with a time of prayer and exploration at Mission Dolores. Our focus today will turn to those who feel trapped and alone. After a full day of service and a dinner at In-and-Out Burger, we’ll venture into Alcatraz. This island prison has reached near mythological proportions in America’s pop culture and holds a few surprises in store for us.
  • Day 5 – Least of These
After our final day of mission, we have some exploration of Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 in store. You’ll venture out from an old nickel arcade and have some time to yourself before we meet at the Fisherman’s Chapel. After a few moments of quiet contemplation we’ll return home. We may need some extra rest for our busy day tomorrow.
  • Day 6 – Lost
After the frenetic hustle of San Francisco’s downtown districts, our home for the next couple days will be like a retreat. In the morning, we’ll pack up and drive down the Pacific coast to our next location: a lighthouse! Our group will have some time to relax at a nearby beach. We’ll also stop at a strange farm to wander through a giant maze.
  • Day 7 – Highway One
For our final day on the California Coast, we’ll travel down the historic Highway One, a stretch of road renowned for its gorgeous scenery. Our team will relax at our home before a hike and a time of prayer to encapsulate our pilgrimage to San Francisco.
  • Day 8 – Departure
Monday we will pack up and say goodbye to a fantastic week of exploration, service and encounter. We have prayed this week without ceasing. What will you take home with you? The voyage is now in fact just beginning, and we pray that you carry fresh perspective and energy with you as you travel.
