Guide Spotlight: Ken Janke

Ken Janke is a heartfelt mentor and compassionate leader to the Wonder Voyage community. His relationship with our Executive Director, Shawn Small, can be traced back to their days in ministry prior to the birth of this organization. Ken was one of the first board members, and he continues to serve in that capacity today.

Ken’s seeds of wisdom make him an invaluable part of the Wonder Voyage community.

“This community has been about people finding a place of belonging where they can contribute the gifts and talents and have a sense that they made a lasting contribution. It isn’t about one man; it’s a family affair.”

One of Ken’s favorite parts of Wonder Voyage is that Guides get the opportunity to develop into experts in certain locations that they are drawn to. For Ken, that location is Croatia.

“Croatia is full of wonder for me. My first mission experience was there, and I’ve gone back more times than I can count. I’ve even planted a church there.”

It’s no surprise that when asked about personal experiences with wonder, Ken immediately reflected on his most recent trip to Croatia. Ken was reconnecting with Danijel Mrsic, the pastor who led the church Ken’s team planted in 1995. The pastor is now aging and close to death.

“He came out to meet me, and we were able to say our goodbyes. To find that closure. The whole time I was there I had heartfelt gratefulness to both the location and to the people. I was able to experience all the wonder the place held for me. It’s full of memories. I believe that remembering people and locations and events is a way of honoring them. That, to me, is what wonder is all about.”

Jamie has been involved with Wonder Voyage for over 15 years. Her passion is connecting givers with worthwhile project as our Legacy Director.
