Why Missions?

As a teenager, I felt a call to mission work but the church I grew up in didn’t have mission trip opportunities. Many years later, as an adult, a pastor at the church I was attending came to me and asked, “Would you like to go on a missions trip to Africa?” My heart leapt and came alive with the possibility. Since then, I’ve had the joy of sharing Jesus through mission trips for nearly 20 years.

Here are three reasons I believe mission trips are vital to every church:

Perspective. That first trip to Africa thrust me into a world where civil war had destroyed so much. It helped me realize that Jesus truly is the hope of the world. Our American lifestyle can be a blessing and a curse in many ways. Getting out of our usual surroundings deepens our relationship with God and broadens our view.

Opportunity. God may be speaking to attendees of your church about taking the first step toward missions. Offering opportunities for them to listen and obey is crucial.

Excitement. The joy and adventure of missions is contagious and life changing! It doesn’t really matter if you travel cross-country or to another country. The joy of serving others is basic to the Christian experience.

We are on a co-mission with Jesus to impact the world and share the good news. A mission trip can awaken hearts to serve, be the means to recognize the call of God, build lasting relationships, and provide the adventure and excitement your congregation longs for. I encourage you and your church to participate in mission trips and see how God will work in wondrous ways.
