Standing with John Spencer: A Call to Prayer for a Faithful Pilgrimage Leader
Since the birth of Wonder Voyage, John Spencer has been a beloved member of our community. He remains a spiritual encouragement and a source of wisdom, humor, and passion for our Voyage Guides and community.
At this year’s Guide Retreat, John had a bandage on his forehead. He shared that it was from a spot that had been removed. A biopsy later confirmed it was Stage 2 melanoma.
Over the last few weeks, doctors confirmed the cancer has spread to his neck area. This moves the diagnosis to Stage 3.
The spot on his head has healed well. While his neck is uncomfortable, John continues with his daily life, though he’s feeling more fatigued.
Next Steps
Last week, John met with the head of oncology. The doctor recommended starting immunotherapy instead of immediate surgery, with the goal of shrinking the tumor and reducing surgical risks near critical nerves.
A second doctor is double-checking the treatment strategy, but the plan is to initiate immunotherapy in two weeks, followed by additional immunotherapy treatments every three weeks for approximately a year.
The doctor is hopeful that surgery can happen within a few months. Side effects vary, but John and his family are hopeful and grateful for the excellent care he’s receiving.
What You Can Do
Please keep John in your prayers as he begins this next phase of treatment.
