Top 5 Domestic Location for Service Trips

Wonder Voyage partners with organizations around the globe so our clients who elect to add service projects to their pilgrimage can have a variety of options. We often ask the hosts we are serving to give us the jobs that nobody else will do. Whether that is cleaning the kitchen, painting a room, or emptying a barn, our willingness to serve allows us to bless both the community and the full-time staff itself.

While all of our locations have service opportunities, if you are looking for a service-focused domestic trip, there are five key locations we suggest: New Orleans, New York City, Albuquerque, Memphis, and San Antonio.

New Orleans

The first Wonder Voyage pilgrimage ever taken was to NOLA 20 years ago! Serving in New Orleans shifts pilgrims’ perspective as they begin to see the beautiful heart and soul of the city. Service projects here often include helping the homeless or working poor. As a Legacy location, Wonder Voyage is committed to ongoing long-term projects in this region.

New York City

The central theme of a New York City service trip is helping the homeless. Wonder Voyage partners with five different ministries that not only feed and clothe New York’s poorest, but they also connect them with the resources they need for recovery, job skills, and housing. These ministries are all deeply ingrained in the community, so if your team has expertise in an area, we can help you find the ministry where you can best serve.

Albuquerque

Albuquerque is home to several types of service trips. Pilgrims can choose to focus on helping the homeless, serving a working farm for special needs youth and adults, or collecting and distributing clothes. Albuquerque is one of five Wonder Voyage Legacy locations. Check out the Mandy’s Farm blog post for an example of how your organization can leave a Legacy.

Memphis

Service trips in Memphis revolve around the working poor.  Like much of the south, there is an educational and economic gap between rich and poor in Memphis. Racial and cultural divides widen that gap. Much of the work Wonder Voyage does in this region is with organizations that focus on the working poor and with the children who end up in foster care as a direct result of poverty.

San Antonio

San Antonio presents a fantastic opportunity for students to work with people who are differently abled. We have watched young people take huge steps in compassion and understanding while working with the residents at our partner ministry. In addition, we work with organizations that serve the working poor and marginally housed.
